The university strongly supports internationalization initiatives including international travel by students. The university also recognizes the risks to safety and security of students engaging in such travel, particularly the risks outlined by the U.S. Department of State when it issues a Travel Warning.
William & Mary's Travel Warning policy applies to all undergraduate student travel which is sponsored, organized, supported or recognized by the College of William & Mary, including the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (the university). This policy establishes the circumstances under which student travel to countries subject to a U.S. State Department Travel Warning is permitted. Details can be found here.
All petitions for spring, summer, fall, and full year study abroad in a country under an elevated Travel Advisory (https://www.wm.edu/offices/revescenter/safety_health_security/travel_alerts_and_warnings/index.php) must be received online no later that 11:59pm on the deadline listed within this registration.
All students considering studying abroad in a Travel Warning country must meet with their designated Global Education Office advisor prior to beginning the application.
NOTE: Apart from the petition to study abroad in a country with a State Department Travel Warning, regarding your program's eligibility for credit transfer, please fill out the Petition to Attend a Non-Approved Study Abroad Program before seeking pre-approval or paying any fees! It may take 2-3 weeks for the Registrar’s Office and Global Education Office to determine eligibility of the program for transfer credit and registration. Allow sufficient time before the application or registration deadlines.
