Considered the birth place of the Renaissance, Florence boasts a rich history and allows visitors access to numerous art galleries, cathedrals, and palaces. It is also one of the best preserved Renaissance centers of art and architecture in the world, and the historic center of Florence was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982. The city is also home to wonderful markets, featuring Italian leather, and delicious Italian cuisine.

Program Description:
Students in the Florence program study under the direction and instruction of William & Mary and local faculty in this one-month intensive Italian program. All courses are held at LinguaViva Language Institute, which is minutes away from the historic center of Florence. Students will experience the city as locals by participating in homestays during this program. Homestays host students in double rooms and provide breakfast and dinner.
Throughout the program students will have the opportunity to explore local sites in Florence as well as other Italian cities. In the past, excursions have included Venice, Cinque Terre, and Chianti country. All excursions include transportation, lodging on overnight excursions, and some meals.
Course Information:
Students earn a total of 7 credits (summer), including 4 credits of Italian language and a choice of two other 3 credit courses (taught in English). Enrollment in the Italian language course is dependent on prior knowledge. Summer course options are:
- ITAL 105/205/305: Italian Language & Literature (4 credits)
- ARTH 222: Art in Florence (3 credits)
- PPUB 391 : Innovations in Policy Making: From the Roman Forum to the Renaissance and the Modern Italian State (3 credits)
- Some of the greatest innovations in policy making - the act or practice of making plans to guide present and future decisions - have originated in Italy. During our time in Florence, we will explore the context, people, and ideas behind policy making, through analysis and visits to key sites of the Roman Empire, the Renaissance and the City State, and now integration into the European Union. In the course we will explore intersections between policy-making and innovation, spanning from the ancient times to the current day. We will seek historical, philosophical, and contemporary perspectives to understand the evolution of governance structures, political thought, and societal dynamics in Italy, and what lessons they may have for contemporary decision making in our current world.
