Cardiff University is one of the highest ranked universities in the United Kingdom. The university has over 30,000 students, including approximately 7,000 international students from over 100 countries. The university has 26 academic departments divided into three colleges: Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Biomedical and Life Sciences; and Physical Sciences. Cardiff University has an active student union (one of the biggest in the UK), which supports over 260 clubs and societies as well as 60 athletic teams and clubs.

The city of Cardiff is the capital and largest city in Wales and is located on the UK's western coast. Wales boasts over 750 miles of coastline and more than 600 castles, and is home to three of the UK's National Parks. The city of Cardiff combines all the advantages of a compact, friendly, and inexpensive location with the cultural and recreational facilities of a modern capital. Cardiff was rank the third best capital city in Europe in 2016 along with Copenhagen and Stockholm. Cardiff is a two-hour train journey to London and also has an international airport with daily flights to many cities within Europe. Cardiff's climate is characterized by mild weather.

The campus is a 10 minute walk from the city center and the majority of student housing is within walking distance from campus and city center.

A Note on Exchange Programs:
Exchange programs require a balance of sending and receiving students, therefore exchange programs may not consistently be available in the semester you are seeking to study abroad.  Please inquire with the GEO Advisor for the most up-to-date information on your program choice, and have some alternative programs in mind should the exchange program not be available or be competitive.

Terms:
Academic Year (Late September - mid-June)
Fall Semester (Late September - late December)
Spring Semester (Late January - mid-June)

Application Deadlines:

Academic Year: March 15
Fall Semester: March 15
Spring Semester: October 2

After students are nominated by W&M, they must submit an online application to Cardiff by October 15 (spring) and April 30 (fall). Students will need to include a list of provisional course module choices, in order of preference, along with 2 reserve modules.

Eligibility:
W&M student in good standing; minimum 3.0 GPA

Course Information:
Students may enroll in a wide range of courses across various disciplines. History courses are difficult to find in the spring semester, as most are year-long modules. Biosciences courses are also year-long modules. Cardiff is a good option for W&M business students.

20 CU credits = 5 W&M credits
10 CU credits = 3 W&M credits

Except for History, all courses must be pre- or post-approved. History courses will be automatically approved as HIST 299 once students submit a syllabus to the Global Education Office. Grades will not appear on W&M transcripts or be included in GPA calculations.

Program Fees:
The tuition exchange agreement between William & Mary and Cardiff University allows W&M students to pay their regular tuition and fees to W&M while taking classes at Cardiff. Students will pay for housing and meals on-site in Cardiff.

Students are also billed a $475 study abroad fee. International medical/evacuation insurance is required for all students who study abroad and a fee of $170 is applied to the students account prior to the start of the program. Students are responsible for airfare and visa costs.

Students participating in semester long study abroad programs must have a visa and/or required entry documents. Please familiarize yourself with the requirements prior to applying and begin the application process immediately after you are nominated for the program. As a reminder, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the end of the program.

Housing and Meals:
Room and board are paid to Cardiff University. W&M students will reside in single occupancy bedrooms with shared kitchens and bathrooms. The cost of housing ranges depending on accommodation type. More information on residences can be found here.  Students apply to the Cardiff online SIMS system once accepted.
