Cádiz is an ancient port city in the Andalucia region of southwestern Spain. Cadiz was an important port in the 16th century for exploration and trade. There are more than 100 watchtowers, including the iconic Torre Tavira, which was traditionally used for spotting ships. There are remains of the medieval city wall and winding streets that link squares, which are home to museums, shops and restaurants.
Program Description:
Excursions during the program may include day trips to Sevilla as well as local field trips in Cádiz. These excursions will allow students to experience the vibrant culture, history, and tradition that flourish in Spain, while encouraging immersion in the Spanish language and the Cádiz community.
Students in the Cádiz summer program will take courses in Spanish language and culture and complete independent, on-site research. Classes with University of Cádiz professors include the study of language, cultural history, and the history of art in Andalucia. Students will also complete an independent research project under the supervision of W&M’s Program Director.
Throughout the program, students live with Spanish families in Cádiz. This homestay includes all meals and allows students to become more fully immersed in local culture and traditions.

Things to Do and See:
Torre Tavira: 1700s observation tower with city views and camera obscura; Cadiz Cathedral, which was built between 1722 and 1838; Castle De Santa Catalina, a fortress built in the 17th century on a rocky outcrop that reaches out to the sea; Genovés Park, a Botanical Garden that is the largest green area of the old town.
Language Requirement:
1 Spanish-Language course numbered HISP 207 (or equivalent) or above.
Course Information:
Students will earn 8 credits through the Cádiz summer program. Enrollment in language courses is dependent on prior knowledge. The following are anticipated courses but not guaranteed:
- HISP 230: Spanish Language and Culture (3 credits)
- HISP 235: Independent Research Project (3 credits)
- HISP 329: History of Art in Andalucia (2 Credits)
There is a required 1 credit course to be taken in the Spring prior to departure, which you will be registered for following program acceptance. This course is designed specifically for students going on the summer program and is intended to enhance your cross-cultural understanding of Cádiz and to cover a variety of pre-departure information.
Courses are taught by W&M faculty and faculty at the University of Cádiz. Grades will appear on the W&M transcript and will be included in GPA calculations.

Application Fee Information:
The application fee ($75) is due by the deadline and should be paid online at the GEO Marketplace Store. Whoever is making the payment will need student 93#, email, and phone number. The application fee is refundable in the event that you are not accepted into the program, or the program is canceled by W&M.

Eligibility:
- Students must be an active W&M undergraduate student in good standing, not on academic or disciplinary probation during time abroad, and eligible to take classes at the W&M Williamsburg campus to study abroad.
- Students currently on-campus must successfully complete 1 credit spring course.
- Course will be held on Tuesdays from 6:00-7:30pm beginning after Spring Break. Location is TBD. This course is mandatory.
