Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia and is located on the south-eastern coast of the continent. It is a trendy city full of public arts, free museums, and rich Aboriginal and colonial history. It also has a Mediterranean climate, wonderful beaches, and is a short drive from the Australian outback, making it a popular holiday destination. Adelaide is located on the traditional lands of the Kaurna people, and the Kaurna culture can be seen through a variety of physical features around the area, including art installations and memorials, as well as through community cultural activities and events. In fact, the City of Adelaide was one of the first to sign a Reconciliation Vision Statement in 1997 and its Reconciliation Action Plan reaffirms a long standing commitment to keep peace with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The University of Adelaide is located in the heart of the city and is close to many of Adelaide's attractions, including state museums, the state libary, parliament buildings, parklands, the Adelaide Zoo, a concert center, sports stadium, botanical gardens, and Adelaide's shopping district. Established in 1874, the University is one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in Australia.
The
New York Times has listed Adelaide as one of the top 52 places to visit in 2015!
Landmarks and Things to See:
Art Gallery of South Australia (free of charge), South Australian Museum (free of charge), Migration Museum (free of charge), Adelaide Gaol (one of the oldest buildings in Adelaide with guided ghost tours at night), hike Mount Lofty (viewing deck on top), Adelaide Central Market (best place to buy cheap and fresh produce).
Program Description:
The Adelaide program will include a W&M faculty-taught course. A second course will examine global environmental and sustainability issues with a focus on Australia. This course will be team taught by faculty from Adelaide University’s Geography, Environment, and Population Department. The Adelaide program will include local field trips to locations that relate directly to these fields of study, such as visits to the Living Kaurna Aboriginal Cultural Center. Possible excursions could include the Migration Museum, the Adelaide Central markets, and the Cleland Conservation Park. Overnight excursions may include Kangaroo Island, a large island off the coast of South Australia noted for its native animals and vegetation, and Flinders Chase National Park, a natural amphitheater of mountains that is an important historical location for the indigenous aboriginal people of Australia.
Students are housed in off-campus apartments near the main campus of University of Adelaide and close to shopping, dining, and public transport. Students will have kitchens in their apartment for meals, as well as many options for dining in the city. Students will be responsible for the majority of their meals; however, some meals will be covered on excursions and a small stipend will be provided for lunches.
Course Information:
All Summer students will be enrolled in:
- ENSP 249: Topics in Sustainability (3 credits)
- ANTH 350: Settler Colonial Encounters in Australia (3 credits)
- This course will explore the history of Australia as an ongoing process of encounter, using a combination of readings, lectures, discussions, guest speakers, museum visits, and field trips focused on South Australia. It is designed to connect your personal experiences and observations during the Adelaide summer program to broader concepts, issues, and questions in the fields of Anthropology and Settler Colonial Studies. Of particular interest will be questions of "country" and its connection to social and cultural activity.
There is a
required 1 credit course to be taken in the Spring prior to departure, which you will be registered for following program acceptance. This course is designed specifically for students going on the summer program and is intended to enhance your cross-cultural understanding of Adelaide and to cover a variety of pre-departure information. The scheduling of this course will be dependent on the class times possible for program participants.
Courses are taught by W&M faculty and faculty at the University of Adelaide. Grades will appear on the W&M transcript and will be included in GPA calculations.
