National University of Singapore (NUS) is one of Asia’s top universities, and Singapore’s oldest and largest university. It offers a range of courses through its 13 undergraduate schools, including Engineering, Law, Medicine, Science, Arts, and Social Sciences. W&M students are able to enroll in courses from most of these faculties. English is the main language of instruction at NUS. NUS has an enrollment of over 38,000 students (28,000 are undergraduates) from over 100 countries. This diversity contributes to vibrant student life. In addition to a wide array of artistic and cultural groups and events on campus, NUS offers state-of-the-art facilities and services, including large performing arts venues, a sports complex, highly rated dining facilities, a health and counseling center, seven libraries, and extensive services for incoming exchange students.

Singapore is a small city-state located just off the southern tip of Malaysia. At one degree above the equator, the city-state enjoys yearlong temperatures that range from 75 - 93° F. Singapore has a population of around 5.6 million. Most Singaporeans are descendants of immigrants from the Malay Peninsula, China, or the Indian sub-continent.  While citizens have gradually acquired a distinct "Singaporean" identity, many still retain customs, practices, and festivals from their orgins, making an interesting mix of the modern and traditional ways. Singapore has four official languages:  Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English.  English is the language of business, education, and administration and is largely understood across the island. It is a highly urbanized nation with one of the lowest crime rates in the world.  The island nation is filled with museums, shops, and theme attractions, through which visitors can experience the modern and multicultural face of Asia. Most of the island is accessible through public buses and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail system. Singapore Changi Airport offers routes to 200 cities in 68 countries. Low cost airlines make visiting much of South East Asia affordable.

A Note on Exchange Programs:
Exchange programs require a balance of sending and receiving students, therefore exchange programs may not consistently be available in the semester you are seeking to study abroad.  Please inquire with the GEO Advisor for the most up-to-date information on your program choice, and have some alternative programs in mind should the exchange program not be available or be competitive.

Terms:
Fall Semester (August--December)
Spring Semester (January--May)
Academic Year (August--May)

Application Deadlines:
Fall Semester: March 1
Spring Semester: September 1
Academic Year: March 1

Course Information:
Students should be choosing Level 1000 to 3000 modules.  Level 4000 modules are reserved for graduating NUS students and have a limited supply. Level 5000 and 6000 modules are graduate-level courses, which are not open to exchange students.

Modules from the NUS Faculty of Law, and Department of Economics are extremely popular and cannot be guaranteed. Students are required to be a major in Law to take courses from that Faculty. Please be advised that students will not receive Business courses from NUS.  If you are planning to study Business, it is recommended that you seek an alternative program.  All incoming students are advised to be flexible with their module requirements, as NUS is not able to guarantee any preferred modules for incoming students.

Except for History, all courses must be pre- or post-approved. History courses will be automatically approved as HIST 299 once students submit a syllabus to the Global Education Office at Reves. Grades will not appear on transcripts or be included in GPA calculations.

Program Fees:
The tuition exchange agreement between the College of William & Mary and National University of Singapore allows W&M students to pay their regular tuition and fees to W&M while taking classes at NUS. Students will pay for housing, meals, and other fees on site in Singapore.

A $75 application fee, $400 study abroad fee, and an international medical/evacuation insurance fee of $170 apply to all students, to be paid to the W&M Bursar's Office prior to the start of the program. Students are responsible for airfare and visa costs.

Students participating in semester long study abroad programs must have a visa and/or required entry documents. Please familiarize yourself with the requirements prior to applying and begin the application process immediately after you are nominated for the program. As a reminder, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the end of the program.

Housing and Meals:
Room and board are paid on site in Singapore. NUS offers on-campus accommodation to exchange students, but it is NOT guaranteed. Exchange students are eligible to apply for on-campus housing when they receive their offer letter from NUS’s Registrar’s Office. NUS offers three types of on-campus accommodation: (1) Residential Colleges, (2) Residences, and (3) Halls of Residence. Students will be able to indicate their accommodation preferences during application, but due to limited housing, NUS may not be able to allocate students to one of their preferred accommodations. With off-campus options generally being more expensive, students are advised to accept any on-campus accommodation offered to them, even if it is not one of their preferred choices.

Eligibility:
W&M student in good standing; minimum 3.0 GPA.
