Keio University is Japan’s oldest institution of higher education and one of its most prestigious. The university is home to more than 33,000 students a year, of which almost 29,000 are undergraduates. Keio has eleven campuses. Mita campus hosts most of the classes and services for visiting exchange students. Some students also have classes at the Hiyoshi campus and housing for international students is typically located around the Hiyoshi Station line. Keio was the first Japanese university to admit foreign students and the first private university to have Japanese students study abroad.

Keio is located in Tokyo, Japan's capital city and the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 35 million people living in the urban area. Tokyo's expansive subway systems makes travel across the metro area fairly easy, reliable, and efficient. The Mita and Hiyoshi areas host many budget friendly restaurants and shops for students. Both campuses are not far from the popular Shibuya area, a popular shopping district.
 

A Note on Exchange Programs:  
Exchange programs require a balance of sending and receiving students, therefore exchange programs may not consistently be available in the semester you are seeking to study abroad.  Please inquire with the GEO Advisor for the most up-to-date information on your program choice, and have some alternative programs in mind should the exchange program not be available or be competitive.

Course Information:
Students may enroll in the Japanese Language and Culture Program (JLP), with a focus on intensive language and culture studies, at the Center for Japanese Studies, or the Keio International Program (KIP), with access to content classes taught in English. There are four levels of Japanese study ranging from elementary to advanced. Students are assigned to an appropriate level based on the results of a placement test. 
 
1 Keio credit = 1 W&M credit

Except for History, all courses must be pre- or post-approved:  Study Abroad Transfer Credit Approval Form. History courses will be automatically approved as HIST 299 once students submit a syllabus to the Global Education Office at Reves. Please note that any courses transferring as Japanese credits (language or otherwise) can only be post-approved.  Grades will not appear on transcripts or be included in GPA calculations.

Program Fees:
The tuition exchange agreement between the William & Mary and Keio University allows W&M students to pay their regular tuition and fees to W&M while taking classes at Keio. Students will pay for housing, meals, and other fees on site in Tokyo.
 
A $75 application fee, $475 study abroad fee, and an international medical/evacuation insurance fee of $170 apply to all students, to be paid to the W&M Bursar's Office prior to the start of the program. Students are responsible for airfare and visa costs. 

Students participating in semester long study abroad programs must have a visa and/or required entry documents. Please familiarize yourself with the requirements prior to applying and begin the application process immediately after you are nominated for the program. As a reminder, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the end of the program.

Housing, Meals, Fees:
Room and board are paid on site in Tokyo. Students are housed in dormitories or independent apartments typically several subway stops away from the Mita campus. Commuting is a central part of the exchange experience. Students should be prepared for a 30 to 40 minute commute. Housing options will be sent to students with acceptance letters from Keio University’s International Center.

Eligibility:
W&M student in good standing; minimum 3.0 GPA
 
One year of college-level Japanese is required.
