For a student of economics, government, or political science, there is no more rewarding opportunity than practical experience that makes a real difference and fosters a comprehensive understanding of the political process from the inside out. Our well-established London Parliamentary Internship semester program allows you to work in close conjunction with a member of the British Parliament in a once-in-a-lifetime context.
You will bring your academic experience into the professional realm. You'll conduct research, plan events, and assist with logistics. For twelve of the fifteen program weeks, three days a week, you will be part of your MP's staff, learning, in a way that few can, the manner in which the legislative process informs and undergirds a nation?s policies, customs and ideologies, from both a domestic and international perspective.
Your semester program consists of both the occupational component and a corresponding academic structure. Supporting this unique cooperative experience is a full complement of coursework, and you will choose your classes from Arcadia's London Semester program an array of specially-taught courses which take full advantage of the city's rich artistic, literary and historical resources.
Two of your classes will pertain directly to your placement and the lessons gathered there. "Working in the UK and the European Union: the Politics, Sociology, and Public Policy of Business and the Professions" is a course that will help you explore the issues related to the professional culture of the UK.
The second course, "Work in Thought and Action" provides a forum for you to meet with your academic internship advisor regarding your internship and the project you will complete as a corollary to your placement. A research paper, creative presentation, or portfolio is a required component of this course. The remaining two courses will be selected from a range of offerings available on the London Semester Program or at London's City University.
This intensive program will invigorate, challenge and inspire you to reach a greater level of professional and academic understanding. You'll earn 14-18 semester hours of credit upon successful completion, and the rewards of this experience will have far-reaching professional and personal benefits
The Arcadia Advantage
An Arcadia program isn't just about enrolling you in an overseas institution, however. It's about all of the services that we provide. Before you go, you can contact our program manager for advice on the application process, choosing courses, or simply what you should pack. Once you arrive, our resident director will lead an orientation program in London that will introduce you to the culture, history and politics of England as well as prepare you for the academic challenges of studying in a different educational system. During the semester, you can expect to participate in excursions that are designed to allow you to reflect on the learning that is taking place outside the classroom.
