Program Description:

Arcadia Trasimeno Archaeology
Exciting research and excavation in scenic Italy

This exciting program uncovers the fascinating archaeology and history of Castiglione del Lago on the shores of Lake Trasimeno between Umbria and Tuscany. You will spend time working on the newly discovered ruins of a Roman Villa, in class with the professor, participating in extracurricular activities in Castiglione and Perugia, and on academic field studies.

Castiglione del Lago is a charming medieval town in Umbria, located on top of a small peninsula along the southwestern shores of Lake Trasimeno. The town is a member of the prestigious I Borghi più Belli d’Italia Association (The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy) and lies among renowned historical cities, such as Orvieto, Chiusi, Arezzo, Cortona, and Perugia.

  • You’ll study two courses with ISI Perugia - The Umbra Institute, one theoretical and one practical, both held in Castiglione del Lago, giving you a comprehensive overview of the latest theories and methods of archaeological research and fieldwork as applied to the civilizations that shaped the history and culture of central Italy.

  • Field studies at various archaeological and cultural sites, including an overnight visit to Rome, are included in the program.

  • You’ll stay in Castiglione during the summer term, only a few miles away from Perugia, and easily accessible either by bus or train.

  • As with all programs at ISI Perugia - The Umbra Institute, students will collaborate with the local community; you’ll work with a local archaeological association and will help the municipality of the town to catalog findings and establish a new archaeological museum.

  • You'll also participate in the Arcadia Italy Weekend: A tailored weekend trip for all Arcadia students coming to Italy to enhance a sense of belonging to the Arcadia community. Students will explore hidden areas of Italy (among the Abruzzo, Marche, or Romagna's countryside) that are off the beaten tracks and authentic. The weekend will provide walking tours, cultural activities, and food experiences to immerse students in Italian culture. It will also be an opportunity to create connections among students in different areas of Italy and encourage exchange visits in reciprocal cities.
