Program Description:
UVA India Masthead 10-AUG-2017

The UVA in India spring semester program in Delhi offers an immersive experience for students interested in India, South Asian Studies, and Hindi language, with the opportunity to engage in an integrated research methods and internship/research component. The program is supported by AIIS, the American Institute of Indian Studies, and hosted at Jamia Millia Islamia University in South Delhi. Students who have not taken courses about India are also encouraged to experience India this way for the first time.

Delhi is the capital of the world's largest democracy and has been the seat of power for several rulers and many empires for over a millennium. The culturally diverse city bridges two different worlds: Old Delhi was once the capital of Islamic India and features narrow lanes and ancient monuments, while the imperial city of New Delhi is composed of spacious avenues and government buildings. Jamia Millia Islamia University is a public central university established in 1920 with programs across a wide variety of disciplines, including social sciences, humanities, engineering, business, and fine arts.

The students will be housed in rented, furnished apartment suites or a group house. Each student will have his or her own bedroom or be expected to share with one other student. The housing will have individual internet connections which students will be expected to purchase, though internet connections in India are often slower and less reliable than internet connections in the United States. The program will help secure inexpensive cell phone cards that are capable of making local calls within India and have data facilities. A cook will be hired to purchase groceries and prepare meals. Cost of breakfast and dinner provided by the cook is included in program fees
