Athens is the capital and largest city in Greece. It was also at the heart of Ancient Greece, a powerful civilization and empire, and is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy. The city is still dominated by 5th-century BC landmarks and is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the famous Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. The city is a testament to the classical era and has the world's largest collection of Greek antiquities. Nafplio is a coastal town in the Peloponnese and was the first capitol of the Kingdom of Greece. The city has a beautiful shoreline, winding streets, and an array of historical sites and attractions.

Athens:
Acropolis Museum; Plaka near the Acropolis is a village-like neighborhood with narrow cobblestoned streets lined with shops selling jewelry, clothes and local ceramics; sidewalk cafes and family-run tavernas stay open until late; Syntagma Square is the central square of Athens located in front of the 19th century Old Royal Palace, housing the Greek Parliament since 1924.

Nafplio:
Every Wednesday and Saturday from early morning until lunchtime, there is a large farmers market; from old town Nafplio, it is easy to get around to see the major sites such as Syntagma Square and the Palamidi castle. 

Program Description:
Run through W&M's Department of Classical Studies, this intensive summer program in Ancient Greek Studies, focuses on Athens and Nafplio. Students visit archaeological sites where they study monuments and art from classical antiquity in their original setting.Excursions include sites within Athens, Nafplio, and other places of interest, such as Delphi, Olympia, Santorini, and Mycenea. Housing and excursion logistics are provided by our institutional partner, College Year Athens (CYA).

While in Athens, students live in furnished apartments close to the offices and classrooms of CYA. In Nafplio and other locations, students stay in double or triple occupancy hotels.  Student meals covered will include lunches while in Athens at the CYA cafeteria and breakfasts while in hotels.  This is included in the program fee. Apartments in Athens have fully equipped kitchens for other meals. While in other locations, students may receive a meal stipend for lunches.

Deposit ($700): March 10
Final payment: April 3

The application fee ($75) is due by the deadline and should be paid online at the GEO Marketplace Store. Whoever is making the payment will need student 93#, email, and phone number. The application fee is refundable in the event that you are not accepted into the program or the program is canceled by W&M.

Reves Summer Scholarships are available for this program.  If applying for a Reves Summer Scholarship, please apply to the W&M faculty-led application BEFORE applying to the Reves Summer Scholarship. 

Students are responsible for airfare, visa expenses if applicable, and some meals.

Eligibility:

• Students must be an active W&M undergraduate student in good standing, not on academic or disciplinary probation during time abroad, and eligible to take classes at the W&M Williamsburg campus to study abroad. 
•  Students currently on-campus must successfully complete 1 credit spring course.
