McGill University, located in downtown Montréal, is considered one of Canada’s best universities and is consistently ranked among the top 30 institutions worldwide. There are over 40,000 students who attend McGill, 25% of which are international. McGill is proud of its wide array of historical figures, such as Ernst Rutherford, famous for his discoveries on radioactivity and the atom’s nucleus; James Naismith, who invented the game of basketball; and Star Trek’s William Shatner.
 
Montréal is the largest city in the province of Québec, and the second largest city in Canada. It is a bilingual, multicultural city with over 80 ethnic communities. Montréal is famed for its yearly festivals, including jazz, film, comedy and more. The Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, Old Montreal, Notre-Dame Basilica, Mont Royal (“the mountain”) and Lafontaine Park are some of Montréal's most popular attractions.
 

A Note on Exchange Programs:  
Exchange programs require a balance of sending and receiving students, therefore exchange programs may not consistently be available in the semester you are seeking to study abroad.  Please inquire with the GEO Advisor for the most up-to-date information on your program choice, and have some alternative programs in mind should the exchange program not be available or be competitive.

After a student is nominated by W&M, they must complete the online McGill application by October 1 (spring) and April 1 (fall). Accepted students may register for pre-arrival webinars in order to obtain more information or assistance in preparation for study at McGill.

Eligibility:
W&M student in good standing; minimum 3.0 GPA

Course Information:
W&M students apply to one of McGill’s faculties (i.e. Arts, Sciences, Management, etc) based on their major. Students should choose courses at McGill in their major/minor field of study or present sufficient educational background in subject area. Some faculties have restrictions; refer to the fact sheet or ask the GEO Advisor for more information. 

After accepting the offer of admission, students should register for courses in late May (fall) and early December (spring) through the online Minerva system. Students are permitted to take one course outside of their admitting faculty. To learn more about course registration and navigating Minerva, visit www.mcgill.ca/students/courses/add.  

The main language of instruction at McGill is English, but many content courses are offered in French as well. 

3 McGill credits = 3 W&M credits
 
Except for History, all courses must be pre- or post-approved. History courses will be automatically approved as HIST 299 once students submit a syllabus to the Global Education Office. Grades will not appear on W&M transcripts or be included in GPA calculations.

Program Fees:
The tuition exchange agreement between William & Mary and McGill University allows W&M students to pay their regular tuition and fees to W&M while taking classes at McGill. Students will pay for housing, meals, and other fees on site in Montreal.

Students are also billed a $475 study abroad fee. International medical/evacuation insurance is required for all students who study abroad and a fee of $170 is applied to the student's account prior to the start of the program. Students are responsible for airfare and visa costs. 

Other fees include mandatory international health insurance set by McGill, which is approximately $376 CAD per semester. There are also program and course charges that will be billed by McGill University upon registration. These charges usually range from $600-1000 CAD per semester and include activity fees, course materials, campus printing, textbooks, etc. Information on McGill's e-billing and how to pay is available here.

Students participating in semester long study abroad programs must have a visa and/or required entry documents. Please familiarize yourself with the requirements prior to applying and begin the application process immediately after you are nominated for the program. As a reminder, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the end of the program.

Housing and Meals: 
While priority is given to first-year degree students, limited places are available for exchange students. Fall and Academic Year students should indicate their interest in on-campus housing in their online application. Spring students must verify available space by emailing housing.residences@mcgill.ca once they have accepted their offer of admission.

Room and board are paid on site in Montreal. Residence and meal plan fees vary with accommodation. Most university housing includes access to laundry and kitchens and is in close proximity to the McGill campus. Students also have the option of living off-campus.
