The program immerses students in the Italian language and culture by enrolling them at one of the finest universities in the south of Italy. Located in the Puglia region (easily recognized on a map as the "heel" of the Italian "boot"), Lecce has long been a respected center of learning. That tradition continues at a university known throughout the country as a leading center for scientific and engineering research, as well as one with distinctive specializations in linguistic, classical, and literary studies. A unique feature of the Arcadia program in Lecce is the opportunity for students to enroll in courses alongside Italian and other international students at the Università del Salento. In order to prepare students for the immersion experience, all program participants must have at least 2 semesters of prior Italian language study. Students are also required to complete an intensive language course at the Università del Salento's Centro Linguistico di Ateneo prior to the start of the academic semester/year.
The intensive language course combines structured time with an array of afternoon activities, all of which are taught in Italian. Each activity focuses on the traditional art forms and crafts of the region. Stone carving, Italian cooking, carta pesta (traditional, ornate pâpier-maché), and lessons on the origins and significance of pizzica (a vigorous and beautiful tarantella-like folk music and dance), are examples of some of the activities which may be available to students through the Università del Salento (offerings will vary by semester). Weekly excursions will take students throughout the beautiful Salentine peninsula, providing a variety of opportunities to experience the distinct cultural traditions of the region and to interact with local residents.
Upon arrival you will meet Università del Salento and Arcadia staff, including resident director Tina Rocchio, who will introduce you to your new home and provide you with a comprehensive orientation program. During the first week, you will move into the housing which Arcadia has pre-arranged for you. All students enrolling in the Arcadia Lecce program will be expected to attend orientation. At this time, academic contracts are signed, expectations are established, basic cultural differences are explained, and practical matters such as internet access, cell phone service, banking, health and safety, rules of conduct, housing issues and emergency contact information are discussed. During the orientation period, you will also have the opportunity to explore your new home, and adjust to your housing.
